Fine for not linking PAN Card-Aadhaar Card: If you have not yet linked your PAN card with Aadhaar, then you should do so soon. In fact, if you do not link PAN and Aadhaar by March 31, 2022, you may have to pay a fine of Rs 1000 as per Income Tax rules. According to Section 234H of the Income Tax Act, 1961, if a person is unable to link PAN and Aadhaar, he will have to pay a fine of Rs 1000 as late fee.

Government gave date line

The last date for linking PAN and Aadhaar is March 31, 2022. Section 234H was introduced by the Finance Act 2021 and is in force from April 1, 2021. Under Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, linking of PAN and Aadhaar number is mandatory.

Replying to a question today whether there will be any penalty for non-linking of PAN card with Aadhaar, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Choudhary in a written reply said, “Under the Finance Act 2021, income tax on PAN-Aadhaar linking A new section 234H has been added to the Act 1961. This section states that if a person is required to provide information of his Aadhaar under sub-section (2) of section 139AA and he fails to do so on or before the due date, he shall be liable to fine. One thousand rupees will have to be given.

He further told that the last date for this is March 1, 2022. The government has extended the last date for linking PAN card and Aadhaar several times in the past. However, the due date cannot be extended.

How to link PAN with Aadhaar

  • For this, first you have to go to the income tax e-filing portal https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/ and register on it if you haven’t already.
  • Your PAN will be your user ID. You can login by entering User ID, Password and Date of Birth.
  • Thereafter, a pop up window will open asking you to link your PAN with Aadhaar.
  • If the pop up window does not open then you can go to ‘Profile Settings’ in the menu bar and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’.
  • As per the PAN, the details like name, date of birth and gender will be mentioned there already. Verify your Aadhaar and PAN card details.
  • If the details match, enter your Aadhaar number and click on the “Link Now” button.
  • After this, a pop-up message will appear informing you that your Aadhaar has been successfully linked with PAN.
